Hansa Rostock Secures Victory in Nail-Biting Match Against Elversberg

27th January 2024

In the second minute of stoppage time, Kai Pröger sent the Ostseestadion into a frenzy as he deceived Elversberg goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof with a penalty kick, securing the winning goal. Prior to this, Elversberg’s goalkeeper failed to hold onto the ball after a long free kick, resulting in Frederik Jäkel blocking the subsequent shot with his arm. The defender was shown a red card. This moment marked the climax of an otherwise uneventful game, in which Dennis Dressel equalized Elversberg’s lead through Luca Schnellbacher’s goal in the 41st minute. These were Rostock’s first goals in three matches. Coach Selimbegovic expressed relief after securing their first home victory, stating, “We fought for every ball. The team wanted it and they were rewarded for their efforts.”

Hansa Rostock’s victory against Elversberg has propelled them to the relegation zone with 20 points, tying them with Bundesliga-relegated team Schalke 04, at least until Sunday. However, Eintracht Braunschweig may surpass them if they defeat 1. FC Magdeburg. On Sunday, 4th February, FCH will face Hannover at 13:30 (NDR Livecenter). Intense Duels, Little Flow

Hansa Rostock’s team, led by Selimbegovic, engaged the technically skilled Elversberg from the start in countless duels. However, their offensive efforts after gaining possession remained fragmented. This was primarily due to their weak passing accuracy, as they only completed around 60 percent of their passes to teammates within the first 30 minutes. Juan José Perea, the hero of their previous thrilling victory, struggled to find his footing. Despite the Saarland team’s recent four winless matches, the game primarily took place between both teams’ penalty areas. There were hardly any chances for a good half-hour until the guests started to dominate.

Schnellbacher Scores from Vandermersch’s Cross

Initially, Hansa Rostock was fortunate when Jannik Rochelt failed to connect with a sharp cross from Paul Wanner on the right side (35th minute). However, six minutes later, they conceded a goal in a similar manner, once again originating from the right side. Schnellbacher headed the ball into the net after a cross from Hugo Vandermersch, leaving FCH goalkeeper Markus Kolke with no chance. Suddenly, the Mecklenburg team also posed a threat, but SVE goalkeeper Kristof deflected Janik Bachmann’s header from a set piece (42nd minute). There were scattered boos from the crowd at halftime.

Rossipal Tests Kristof, Dressel Scores

The overall picture did not change much after the restart. The guests played more fluidly, but FC Hansa had the first significant opportunity: Kristof easily saved Alexander Rossipal’s free kick (58th minute). However, eleven minutes later, the 24-year-old goalkeeper was beaten. It was a set piece that brought the “Kogge” (a reference to Rostock’s maritime history) the equalizer. Oliver Hüsing headed a throw-in from the right side, and Dressel scored with a volley-grafting effort, somewhat fortuitously, to make it 1-1.

Pröger Shoots Hansa to Victory in Stoppage Time

FC Hansa’s determination was evident in their subsequent play, but their attempts seemed limited and ineffective in securing three points. Instead, Kolke and his teammates relied on luck initially, as Manuel Feil failed to strike the ball properly and narrowly missed the target in the 79th minute. A draw seemed imminent, but then Kristof misjudged the flight of the ball, resulting in Jäkel blocking it with his arm. Pröger seized the opportunity and relieved FC Hansa by scoring the winning goal.
