Walter E. Calmette Sr., a prominent figure in the film industry and beloved film sales and acquisition executive, passed away on January 6 at the age of 85. His remarkable contributions to the entertainment world, especially his dedicated work with Felix the Cat, will always be remembered.

A Journey from Peru to Hollywood

Calmette Sr. began his journey in the entertainment industry after immigrating to the United States from Peru in 1958. While pursuing his education, he started working at Films Incorporated, where he sold films to college campuses. His hard work and dedication eventually led him to become the overseer of the Hollywood office for the Chicago-based company.

Thriving Career in the Film Industry

In 1980, Calmette Sr. joined Avco Embassy Pictures as a director and later became the Vice President of non-theatrical sales. With his exceptional skills, he received top sales honors from hotel and airline clients. In 1984, he moved to New World Entertainment as the Senior Vice President of acquisitions, continuing his work in ancillary sales, licensing, merchandising, and theatrical acquisitions. Calmette Sr. also handled acquisitions and ancillary sales for Studio Three Film Corp. and worked at Reiss Media, showcasing his expertise in the industry.

Overseeing Felix the Cat Productions

Calmette Sr.’s extensive experience and knowledge made him the perfect candidate to run business affairs for Felix the Cat Productions. For over 30 years, he oversaw the worldwide merchandising and licensing deals for the iconic character. Additionally, he served as the executive producer for the video feature “Felix the Cat Saves Christmas,” leaving a lasting impact on the franchise.

A Life Full of Love and Legacy

Walter E. Calmette Sr. is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mila, who stood by his side through all of his remarkable achievements. He is also survived by his son, Walter Jr., and daughter-in-law, Heidi, along with grandchildren Michael, Andrew, and John. His daughter, Kira Calmette Feola, son-in-law Andrew, and grandchildren Nico and Alex are left with cherished memories. Additionally, he leaves behind his “grandsons” Mathew and Michael Bazarevitsch, who were part of his extended family.
