Kansas City, Mo. – Sister Berta Sailer, the co-founder of Operation Breakthrough, peacefully passed away in her sleep on Thursday morning. Her tireless dedication to improving the lives of children in poverty has left an indelible mark on the Kansas City community.
A Life Dedicated to Empowering Children and Families
Together with Sister Corita Bussanmas, Sister Berta founded Operation Breakthrough in 1971. Their mission was to create a safe, loving, and educational environment for children in poverty, while also empowering their families through advocacy, emergency aid, and education.
Under Sister Berta’s leadership, Operation Breakthrough grew to serve over 700 children every day of the week. The organization provided a wide range of services, including on-site medical and dental care, family support, therapy sessions, and educational enrichment opportunities.
Sister Berta’s impact extended beyond the walls of Operation Breakthrough. She created the “City You Never See” bus tour, a unique experience where parents of children at the organization narrated the challenges faced by families in need. Additionally, her “100 Jobs for 100 Moms” program aimed to provide struggling mothers with employment opportunities to support their children.
A Beloved Community Leader
Sister Berta’s remarkable dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2001, she was honored with the Kindest Kansas Citian Award, recognizing her immense compassion and selflessness. In 2007, she and Sister Corita received the Community Service Award from the Women’s Political Caucus.
In 2021, both Sister Berta and Sister Corita were inducted into UMKC’s Starr Women’s Hall of Fame, solidifying their status as influential figures in Kansas City’s history.
