Melanie, Singer and Songwriter of Woodstock Fame, Dies at 76

Melanie, the husky-voiced singer and songwriter who captured the hearts of audiences at the legendary Woodstock music festival in 1969, has passed away at the age of 76. Her children, Leilah, Jeordie, and Beau Jarred, announced her death on social media, but did not disclose the cause or location of her passing.

A Presence on the Folk Scene

Born as Melanie Satka in 1947, Melanie was already a prominent figure in the New York folk scene by the age of 22 when she took the stage at Woodstock. Among the sea of performers, she stood as one of the three women who performed solo, a feat that filled her with both excitement and fear. The thought of performing in front of a massive crowd, far larger than the intimate coffeehouse audiences she was accustomed to, petrified her.

As fate would have it, rain started to fall just before Melanie’s performance. It was during this moment that she witnessed a beautiful sight: people in the crowd lighting candles. Inspired by this poignant image, she went on to write and record “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” with the gospel-style backing of the Edwin Hawkins Singers. In 1970, the song was released and became her first hit, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Controversy and Charm of “Brand New Key”

While “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” introduced Melanie to the world, it was her charming and seemingly innocent song, “Brand New Key,” that became her biggest hit. The simplicity of the tune charmed listeners, but it also sparked controversy. Some radio stations even banned the song due to perceived sexual innuendo in lyrics such as “I’ve got a brand-new pair of roller skates, you’ve got a brand-new key.” Melanie acknowledged that these words could be interpreted in a suggestive manner, but insisted that it was not her intention.

In an interview, she revealed, “‘Brand New Key’ I wrote in about 15 minutes one night. I thought it was cute; a kind of old ’30s tune. I guess a key and a lock have always been Freudian symbols, and pretty obvious ones at that. There was no deep serious expression behind the song, but people read things into it.”

A Talented Songwriter

In addition to her memorable hits, Melanie’s talent as a songwriter extended to other compositions. One of her notable works, “What Have They Done to My Song, Ma,” was later covered by the New Seekers and achieved Top 20 success in 1970 under the title “Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma.”

With Melanie’s passing, the music industry has lost a beloved and influential figure. Her unique voice and songwriting abilities will continue to resonate with audiences for generations to come. While we mourn her loss, we celebrate the incredible legacy she leaves behind. Rest in peace, Melanie.
