Mary Weiss, Lead Singer of The Shangri-Las, Passes Away at 75

Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the iconic 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, has sadly passed away at the age of 75. Miriam Linna, founder of Weiss’ label, Norton Records, confirmed the news on Sunday, stating that Weiss died on Friday in Palm Springs, California. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.

A Pioneering All-Female Group

The Shangri-Las, hailing from the borough of Queens in New York City, consisted of two pairs of sisters: Mary Weiss and Elizabeth “Betty” Weiss, as well as Marguerite “Marge” Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They first met in school and began performing at local events such as school dances and teen hops.

After catching the attention of producer Artie Ripp, the Shangri-Las signed with Kama Sutra Productions. Their unique blend of a tough, working-class image and emotionally charged songs resonated with audiences, making them one of the most successful girl groups of the mid-1960s. Their name was inspired by a restaurant in Queens.

A Chart-Topping Career

The Shangri-Las’ first major hit, “Remember (Walking in the Sand),” reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in 1964 under Red Bird Records. At just 15 years old, Weiss showcased her remarkable talent. This song, later covered by Aerosmith, was written by the renowned pop songwriter-producer George “Shadow” Morton, known for his work in the Brill Building.

Morton’s influence on the Shangri-Las was significant, as he crafted a sound that combined R&B elements with the raw emotions of teenage life. One of their most popular singles, “Leader of the Pack,” co-written by Morton, topped the Billboard charts in 1965. The lyrics, passionately sung by Weiss, captured the essence of forbidden love and defiance against societal expectations.

A Legacy That Endures

Despite disbanding in 1968 due to legal issues, the Shangri-Las left an indelible mark as a pioneering all-female group. Their music continues to resonate with audiences today, and their influence can be heard in the work of countless artists who followed in their footsteps.

Mary Weiss will be remembered as a talented and influential singer who played a vital role in shaping the sound of the 1960s. Her powerful vocals and emotive performances left a lasting impact on the music industry. While her cause of death remains unknown, her legacy as the lead singer of the Shangri-Las will undoubtedly live on.
