MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — Dr. Robert L. Shipp, a University of South Alabama teacher and researcher who strongly influenced fisheries management in the Gulf of Mexico, has passed away at the age of 81. Shipp, professor emeritus of marine sciences, died in Tampa, Florida, surrounded by his children after a brief illness.
Dr. Shipp’s impact on the University and the region is immeasurable. He was not only a respected professor but also a mentor and a conservationist who dedicated his life to the study of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. His knowledge and passion inspired countless students and colleagues.
Born in New Orleans, Dr. Shipp joined the Department of Biology at the University of South Alabama in 1972. Over the course of his 40-year career, he made significant contributions to the field of marine sciences and played a key role in establishing the Department of Marine Sciences at the university.
