Beloved Gorilla Delilah Passes Away at Belfast Zoo
Delilah, a renowned gorilla who captured the hearts of many during her time on the show Animal Magic with Johnny Morris, has sadly passed away at Belfast Zoo. She had been a cherished member of the zoo for an impressive 32 years.
Her death comes just a few months after the zoo celebrated her 60th birthday, making her one of the oldest gorillas in captivity.
A Life of Special Care and Enrichment
In recent years, Delilah had been placed on a specialized diet and received baby porridge with her medication each morning. The dedicated veterinary team and keepers at Belfast Zoo worked tirelessly to address any health issues promptly, ensuring that Delilah received the best possible care.
Furthermore, the keeping team made sure to maintain Delilah’s activity levels through enrichment and interactions. This approach allowed her to stay fit and play an important role within her family group, contributing to her long and happy life.
A Difficult Decision
Unfortunately, Delilah recently developed a chest infection, and after careful consideration, the decision was made to euthanize her to prevent further deterioration of her condition.
The team at Belfast Zoo is deeply saddened by her loss, as she had become a beloved character among both keepers and visitors. Over the years, countless people have enjoyed watching Delilah play with the young gorillas and even climb to the highest point of the climbing frame, surprising everyone with her agility.
Delilah arrived at Belfast Zoo in 1992 and was part of the first gorilla group there. Prior to her time at the zoo, she rose to fame on the hit show Animal Magic with Johnny Morris, where she charmed the nation and educated the public about the Western Lowland Gorilla.
A Species in Peril
The Western Lowland Gorilla, to which Delilah belonged, is classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Delilah’s presence at the zoo helped raise awareness about the plight of this remarkable species.
Julie Mansell, the zoo curator, fondly remembers Delilah as a character who had been a part of Belfast Zoo’s family for many years. Despite her occasional grumpiness, Delilah was known for her role in keeping the younger gorillas in line and for her ability to brighten the day of anyone who worked with her.
While her passing was expected due to her advanced age, it remains a difficult time for all who were involved with Delilah during her time at Belfast Zoo.
Delilah’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a legacy of joy and education, reminding us of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species like the Western Lowland Gorilla.
