Legendary CBS Journalist Charles Osgood Dies at 91
Charles Osgood, the highly respected journalist and anchor of CBS Sunday Morning, passed away at the age of 91, according to the Associated Press. Osgood, a five-time Emmy Award winner, was known for his warm and erudite broadcasting style, as well as his talent for writing essays and light verse. He hosted the long-running radio program, The Osgood File, and was affectionately referred to as CBS News’ poet in residence.
A Remarkable Career
Osgood took over the helm of CBS Sunday Morning in 1994, following in the footsteps of the beloved Charles Kuralt. Despite the daunting task of filling Kuralt’s shoes, Osgood’s folksy charm and slightly bookish style immediately resonated with viewers, who continued to embrace the program as a leisurely TV magazine.
Osgood’s journey in journalism began after graduating from Fordham University in 1954. He started as a classical music DJ in Washington, DC, and later served in the Army. Upon his return, he played a key role in launching WHCT in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1963, he landed an on-air position at ABC Radio in New York before joining the CBS-owned New York news radio station Newsradio 88 as a reporter in 1967.
However, it was a fateful weekend that changed the course of Osgood’s career. He was called upon to fill in at the anchor desk for CBS’ Saturday newscast, and from that moment on, he became a fixture at the network. In 1971, he launched his renowned radio feature, The Osgood File, and joined the CBS network.
Awards and Recognition
Osgood’s contributions to broadcasting were widely recognized. In 1990, he was inducted into the radio division of the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2008, he received the NAB’s Distinguished Service Award. Over the course of his career, Osgood won four Emmy Awards and received a fifth lifetime achievement honor in 2017.
After retiring in 2016, Osgood reflected on his decades-long career in a characteristically humble and poetic manner. “For years now, people—even friends and family—have been asking me why I continue doing this, considering my age,” he said. “It’s just that it’s been such a joy doing it. It’s been a great run, but after nearly 50 years at CBS… the time has come.”

He embodied the heart and soul of CBS Sunday Morning, captivating audiences with his musical performances and insightful storytelling.
