Legendary Broadcaster Charles Osgood Passes Away at 91

In sad news, the beloved TV and radio broadcasting legend, Charles Osgood, has passed away at the age of 91. According to CBS News, Osgood’s family has indicated that dementia was the cause of his death.

A Legacy in Broadcasting

Charles Osgood will forever be remembered for his iconic role as the anchor of “CBS Sunday Morning” for over two decades. His familiar face and soothing voice became a fixture on our screens every Sunday. But his impact extended far beyond television. Osgood also made his mark on the radio, entertaining listeners for more than four decades.

Osgood’s unique and irreplaceable presence was aptly described by “Sunday Morning” executive producer Rand Morrison. He said, “To say there’s no one like Charles Osgood is an understatement. He embodied the heart and soul of ‘Sunday Morning.’ His signature bow tie, his poetry… just his presence was special for the audience, and for those of us who worked with him. At the piano, Charlie put our lives to music. Truly, he was one of a kind – in every sense.”

His successor, Jane Pauley, who took over as the host of “CBS Sunday Morning” after Osgood’s departure in 2016, spoke highly of his exceptional talent. She said, “Watching him at work was a masterclass in communicating. I’ll still think to myself, ‘How would Charlie say it?’ trying to capture the elusive warmth and intelligence of his voice and delivery. He was one of the best broadcast stylists and one of the last. His style was so natural and unaffected it communicated his authenticity. He connected with people. Watching him on TV, or listening on the radio, as I did for years, was to feel like you knew him, and he knew you. He brought a unique sensibility, curiosity, and his trademark whimsy to ‘Sunday Morning,’ and it endures.”

A Multifaceted Talent

Aside from his broadcasting career, Osgood also lent his voice to the animated film “Horton Hears a Who!” in 2008, captivating audiences with his narration.

Charles Osgood’s passing is a great loss to the world of broadcasting. His warm and genuine presence will be deeply missed by his fans and colleagues alike.
