László Grétsy, Hungarian Linguist and Education Figure, Passes Away at 91

László Grétsy, a renowned Hungarian linguist, teacher, and influential figure in Hungarian language education, has sadly passed away at the age of ninety-one. The news of his passing was announced during a conference, where he was supposed to be the guest of honor.

Linguist Miklós Blankó shared the news of Grétsy’s death, accompanied by a heartfelt message, on his social media platform. According to Blankó, Grétsy peacefully passed away in his sleep.

A Life Dedicated to Language Education

László Grétsy graduated from the Faculty of Arts at Eötvös Loránd University in 1954, majoring in Hungarian history. In 1960, he obtained a degree in linguistics and began working as a research associate at the Institute of Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Over the years, he climbed the ranks and eventually became the head of the department responsible for the Hungarian language. In 1992, he was elected co-chairman of the Hungarian Language Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Grétsy’s passion for language education led him to become a well-known linguist in his country. He hosted informative television programs, such as “Let’s Stop for a Word!” alongside István Vágó. In these shows, Grétsy explained the origins and usage of various Hungarian words, enlightening viewers about their language. He also contributed to several professional journals, served as the responsible editor for “Our Sweet Mother Tongue,” and worked as a columnist for “Élét és Tudomány” and “Szabad Föld” newspapers. Until February 2022, he was a member of the editorial board at “Magyar Nyelvőr,” from which he was unexpectedly removed just two weeks before his birthday.
