Retired Third Circuit Court Judge James Callahan Passes Away at 82
Retired Third Circuit Court Judge James Callahan, a respected figure in the legal community, sadly passed away on Saturday, Jan. 13. He was 82 years old.
A Life of Service and Dedication to the Law
Callahan’s journey in the legal field began after he completed his studies at the University of Illinois, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He then went on to obtain his juris doctorate from the Detroit College of Law in 1972. This marked the beginning of a remarkable 33-year career as a trial attorney before his election to the circuit court.
Throughout his life, Callahan demonstrated a deep commitment to public service. He initially aspired to become a teacher due to his love for history but ultimately combined his passion for history with his dedication to the law. His extensive involvement in various social, alumni, and veteran groups, including the Grosse Pointe Men’s Club, Grosse Pointe Boat Club, and The Helm in Grosse Pointe, showcased his commitment to his community.
A Beloved Partner and Avid Traveler
Callahan’s longtime partner, Marcia Cron, expressed her deep affection for him, describing him as the “best thing” in her life. The couple shared a love for adventure and had recently returned from a trip to Mexico on the day of his passing. Cron reminisced about their joyful moments together, stating, “He made my life great, easy, and fun. He went all out.”
Fondly Remembered and Survived By
Callahan was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Shirley, and his brother, Michael. He is survived by his son, Michael; daughter, Katherine; brother, John; sister, Bridget Stalvey; granddaughter, Daphne; his loving partner of eight years, Marcia Cron; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Legacy of Service Honored
The Frank Murphy Hall of Justice Historical Society will be hosting a memorial wake in honor of Callahan on Thursday at the Old Shillelagh at 4 p.m. The event welcomes all who wish to pay their respects and celebrate the life of this remarkable individual.
