The founder of the biggest school chain, City Montessori Schools (CMS), Jagdish Gandhi, sadly passed away on Monday morning in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh at the age of 87. He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Bharti Gandhi, and their four children. Jagdish Gandhi had been receiving life support treatment for over three weeks at a private hospital before his passing.

Jagdish Gandhi leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as the visionary founder of CMS, Lucknow. With 21 branches and a staggering 61,000 students, CMS is renowned for delivering exceptional quality education.

The CMS management released a statement saying, “Gandhi’s vision of education was rooted in academic excellence. He organized 20 international student events each year to promote cross-cultural understanding, and initiated an annual meeting of Chief Justices of the World to discuss global governance structures.”

In addition, the statement added, “Gandhi was a strong advocate for inter-religious harmony, believing in the concept of ‘vasudhaiva kutumbakam’ (the world is one family). This commitment led to CMS being honored with the prestigious UNESCO Prize for Peace Education in 2002.”

From 5 Students to World’s largest school- CMS Journey

In 1959, Dr. Jagdish Gandhi and Dr. Bharti Gandhi embarked on an incredible journey by founding CMS with just five children and a borrowed capital of 300 Rupees. The school is affiliated with the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE). Over the years, CMS has grown into the world’s largest school, with 21 branches and over 61,000 students worldwide.

Gandhi’s progressive approach to education challenged the traditional method of rote memorization, instead placing emphasis on individual expression, a love for learning, and a child-centered model. CMS embraced the principles of the Montessori method, encouraging hands-on learning, self-reliance, and a deep connection to nature.

Gandhi’s dedication to holistic education is evident in CMS’s impact, transforming once barren landscapes into lush green havens and introducing innovative projects to promote financial literacy. CMS’s legacy lives on through its accomplished alumni, who have excelled as scientists, artists, activists, and leaders, truly exemplifying the transformative power of education.

Rest in peace, Jagdish Gandhi. Your contributions to education and your unwavering commitment to fostering a better world will never be forgotten.
