Founder of Burnsville-based Company Passes Away at 78
BURNSVILLE, MN. (Northern News Now) – The founder of a Burnsville-based company, Don Kotula, has sadly passed away at the age of 78.
Northern Tool + Equipment announced that Kotula peacefully passed away on Saturday, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by many.
Early Life and Career
Don Kotula was born and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota. He later attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he graduated with a degree in business and marketing.
After completing his education, Kotula founded Northern Tool + Equipment in his garage in Eagan, Minnesota. Over the years, he transformed the company into a renowned destination for trade professionals and dedicated DIY enthusiasts across the nation.
Kotula’s sons, Ryan and Wade Kotula, expressed their admiration and gratitude for their father’s contributions. They stated, “Our father will be remembered for his passion, humor, spontaneity, and the countless stories he shared showcasing his zeal for life. His legacy lives on through the great company he founded and built over 42 years ago. We are excited about the future of Northern Tool, thanks in large part to the solid foundation and values our dad instilled in all of us. He was the true embodiment of what our company stands for and will be greatly missed.”

The Kotula family has requested that any commemorations or charitable donations be made to the Northern Tool + Equipment Foundation, which supports the Tools for the Trades program.
