Dexter Scott King, Son of Civil Rights Icon Martin Luther King Jr., Passes Away at 62
ATLANTA (AP) — Dexter Scott King, the younger son of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, passed away on Monday at the age of 62 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.
The King Center in Atlanta, where Dexter King served as chairman, announced that he peacefully passed away at his home in Malibu, California. His wife, Leah Weber King, stated that he died in his sleep.
A Legacy Carried Forward
Dexter King, the third of the Kings’ four children, was named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father first served as a pastor. Tragically, he was only 7 years old when his father was assassinated in 1968.
As an adult, Dexter King pursued a career as an attorney and dedicated himself to preserving his father’s legacy and safeguarding the King family’s intellectual property rights. In addition to his role as chairman of the King Center, he also served as president of the King estate.
His mother, Coretta Scott King, passed away in 2006, followed by his older sister Yolanda King in 2007.

The Rev. Bernice A. King, Dexter King’s youngest sibling, expressed her profound grief in a statement, saying, “Words cannot express the heartbreak I feel from losing another sibling.”
Dexter King’s older brother, Martin Luther King III, also shared his devastation, stating, “The sudden shock is devastating. It is hard to have the right words at a moment like this. We ask for your prayers at this time for the entire King family.”
