Dexter Scott King, Son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Passes Away at 62
Dexter Scott King, the youngest son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, has sadly passed away at the age of 62. The King Center announced the news, stating that Dexter died on Monday after a valiant battle with prostate cancer.
His wife of 11 years, Leah Weber King, shared that he passed away peacefully in his sleep at their home in Malibu. She expressed admiration for his bravery and strength in fighting the disease until the very end.
A Legacy of Continuing His Father’s Work
Dexter, who was only 7 years old when his father was assassinated in 1968, played a significant role in preserving and continuing his father’s legacy. At the time of his death, he served as the chairman of the King Center.
The King Center’s statement highlighted Dexter’s dedication to protecting his father’s work and the importance he placed on perpetuating his father’s message of equality and justice.
A Life of Service and Resilience
Born on January 30, 1961, Dexter was named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father served as the pastor. He followed in his father’s footsteps by attending Morehouse College.
While initially pursuing a career in acting in California, Dexter answered the call of family duty and devoted himself to continuing his father’s work. He even portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 2002 television movie, The Rosa Parks Story, showcasing his uncanny resemblance to his father.
A Devastating Loss for the King Family
The sudden and unexpected loss of Dexter has left the King family in shock and devastated. Martin Luther King III, Dexter’s brother, expressed the difficulty of finding the right words to convey his grief and asked for prayers for the entire family during this challenging time.
Dr. Bernice A. King, Dexter’s sister and the CEO of The King Center, shared her heartbreak and the immense pain she feels. She requested strength to navigate through this difficult period.
A Legacy Lives On
Dexter Scott King is survived by his wife, sister, brother, niece Yolanda Renee King, and other extended family members. His father, mother, and sister Yolanda, who passed away in 2007, preceded him in death.
A memorial service to celebrate Dexter’s life will be held at a later date, yet to be announced.
