Larry Zimmer, Legendary Broncos and University of Colorado Radio Broadcaster, Passes Away at 88
Larry Zimmer, a beloved figure in the world of sports broadcasting, has sadly passed away at the age of 88. With a career spanning over half a century, Zimmer left an indelible mark on the Broncos and University of Colorado communities.
A Life Dedicated to Sports
Throughout his career, Zimmer served as the voice of the Buffaloes for an impressive 42 seasons, beginning in 1971. His passion for broadcasting extended to the Broncos, where he called games as the color commentator from 1971-89 and as the play-by-play announcer from 1990-96. In total, Zimmer called over 500 Broncos games, including four Super Bowls.
His contributions to the world of sports broadcasting did not go unnoticed. Zimmer was inducted into the Broadcast Professionals of Colorado Hall of Fame in 2009, the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, and the CU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.
A Voice Remembered
Zimmer’s distinctive voice became synonymous with the Buffaloes’ athletic program. His talent and dedication were recognized by players, coaches, and fans alike. Former Colorado football and basketball player David Logan described Zimmer as a “great partner, great broadcaster, and great person.” Zimmer’s impact on the Broncos and Buffaloes will be felt for years to come.
A Fond Farewell
The Broncos organization expressed their deep sadness at the loss of Zimmer, stating, “During his 52-year association with the Broncos, Larry called some of the franchise’s most iconic moments and helped honor some of our greatest legends.” Zimmer’s wife, Brigitte, and his entire family are in the thoughts of the Broncos community during this difficult time.
The University of Colorado also paid tribute to Zimmer, planning a moment of silence before a women’s basketball game in his honor. Athletic director Rick George described Zimmer as “a CU institution” and emphasized the impact he had on the university’s athletic program. Zimmer’s legacy will forever be a part of the school’s history.
A Life Well-Lived
Outside of his broadcasting career, Zimmer had a rich and fulfilling life. Born in New Orleans in 1935, he graduated from Missouri in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant and receiving the Army Commendation Medal.
Zimmer is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brigitte, and his children Lawrence III and Tracey Robb. His legacy will continue to live on through their memories.
