Born on February 29, 1920, in Walthamstow, London, Joan Shaw, nee Barker, showed her exceptional commitment to education from an early age. She embarked on her teaching journey and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1953, she became Barnsley’s youngest headteacher at Blackburn Lane School. Later, she moved to St Matthew’s School, where she continued to serve as a headteacher throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

Joan’s parents, Alfred and Eva Barker, shared a fascinating detail about her birth. They revealed that in 1920, there were only five ‘leap year’ babies born in London, and they were proud that Joan was one of them.

Joan’s dedication to education extended beyond her own career. She was married to Kenneth Shaw, who served as the headteacher at Hickleton School. Kenneth was also the former organist at St Mary’s Church until his passing in 1979.

In her later years, Joan moved into the Orchard Views Care Home, where she spent her final days. On New Year’s Eve, surrounded by the care and comfort of the facility, Joan Shaw peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by all those whose lives she touched.
