Known for his unwavering dedication to the Florida State University (FSU) athletics program, Joanos was a beloved figure in the community and a true super fan.

Born and raised in Tallahassee, Joanos attended Leon High School before enrolling at FSU, where he graduated with a degree in government and public administration in 1956. During his time at FSU, Joanos was not only a member of the track team but also a respected leader within the student body.

After completing three years of service in the Air Force, Joanos pursued his passion for law at Yale Law School. Upon receiving his law degree, he returned to his hometown to practice law.

Joanos’s legal career took him to great heights, as he became a circuit judge and appellate judge, eventually rising to the esteemed position of chief judge of the Tallahassee-based 1st District Court of Appeal. His exemplary work in the field of law earned him the admiration and respect of his peers, with veteran Tallahassee attorney Don Hinkle describing him as the epitome of what a good judge should aspire to be.

Throughout his life, Joanos remained deeply connected to FSU. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of FSU’s College of Law and served as an adjunct professor for over 20 years. Joanos’s dedication to FSU extended beyond the classroom and courtroom. He and his wife, Betty Lou, were recognized as the consummate Super Seminole couple. Their love for the university’s student athletes was unparalleled, and they were actively involved in various FSU organizations.

FSU Vice President and Athletics Director Michael Alford expressed his gratitude for the impact Joanos had on the university and its community, stating, “Their love for our Seminole student athletes is so special, and they have made an impact on so many through the years. They exemplify what being a Seminole fan is all about. We will miss him.”

Those who had the privilege of working with or appearing before Joanos praised his scholarly demeanor and gentlemanly nature. His humility, integrity, and common sense made him an exceptional judge and an even better person, according to Hinkle.

Judge John Cooper of Tallahassee fondly remembered his interactions with Joanos, describing him as one of the nicest judges he had ever appeared in front of. Joanos’s ability to remember everyone’s name and his sly sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him.
