Benedict Fitzgerald, Screenwriter of “The Passion of the Christ,” Passes Away
Screenwriter Benedict Fitzgerald, best known for his work on the critically acclaimed film “The Passion of the Christ,” has sadly passed away. The news of his death was confirmed by his cousin, Nancy Ritter, and he was 74 years old at the time of his passing.
Fitzgerald, who had been battling a long illness, passed away on January 17 in Marsala, Sicily, according to a report by Variety.
Achievements and Legacy
Throughout his career, Fitzgerald had several notable works to his name, but he will forever be remembered as the co-writer of the biblical drama “The Passion of the Christ.” Released in 2004, the film, directed by Mel Gibson, depicted the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in the United States.
In a 2004 interview, Fitzgerald spoke about the challenges he faced while working on the project. He described it as a sacred endeavor that allowed him to reconnect with his spirituality. The film aimed to remind audiences of their own spiritual sides, and for Fitzgerald, it was a personal journey of rediscovery.
A Complex Relationship
It is worth noting that Fitzgerald’s relationship with Gibson was not without its complications. In 2008, Fitzgerald filed a lawsuit against Gibson, claiming breach of contract and alleging that he was not informed about the true budget of “The Passion of the Christ.” The lawsuit was eventually settled out of court in 2009 for an undisclosed amount.
Other Works and Recognition
Aside from “The Passion of the Christ,” Fitzgerald had a diverse body of work. In 1979, he co-wrote the film “Wise Blood” with his brother, Michael Fitzgerald. The movie, starring Brad Dourif, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ned Beatty, received positive reviews and holds a strong retroactive score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fitzgerald also ventured into television, adapting the iconic novel “Moby Dick” into a miniseries script in 1998. He worked on various TV movies and shows, including “Heart of Darkness,” “Zelda,” “In Cold Blood,” and “Evil.” Both “In Cold Blood” and “Moby Dick” received multiple Emmy Award nominations.
Family and Personal Life
Fitzgerald is survived by his wife, Mason, whom he had been married to since 1991. He also leaves behind three daughters (Eugenie, Helena, and Olimpia), as well as three siblings (Ughetta, Maria, Michael, Barnaby, and Caterina), and three grandchildren.
