Iconic Lancaster real estate agent Marilyn Berger passed away last week at the age of 91. Despite recent health issues, Berger was still working diligently to finalize a real estate deal just days before her passing. Known for her relentless enthusiasm and persuasive salesmanship, Berger was the leading figure in high-end commercial and residential real estate in Lancaster for over 50 years.

Berger’s daughter, Marilyn Berger-Shank, shared that her mother worked until she physically couldn’t anymore. Berger-Shank also worked alongside her mother as an agent at Marilyn Berger & Associates, a Keller Williams Elite real estate office. Anne Flawd, Berger’s longtime assistant, described her as a tireless worker who was always on the phone, dialing and making deals.

Berger’s impact on the Lancaster community was immeasurable. She opened her own real estate office in 1979 after starting her career in 1966. Throughout her career, Berger was involved in numerous real estate development projects, including the Northgate condo and commercial development on North Queen Street and the Lime Spring Farm commercial and industrial development in West Hempfield Township.

Ian Ruzow, a partner with Oak Tree Development Group, praised Berger’s business acumen and personal grace, stating that her loss would leave a void that could never be filled. Former Lancaster city mayor Rick Gray also praised Berger, describing her as a delightful person who knew how to drive a bargain. Gray highlighted Berger’s ability to negotiate and get the best deals while also being a trailblazer for women in the real estate industry.

Berger’s success in real estate was attributed to her hard work, perseverance, and genuine care for her clients. She saw each day as an opportunity to help people and achieve success. Berger’s mentorship and advice were invaluable to many local real estate professionals, and she freely shared her knowledge and expertise with her peers.

Outside of her real estate career, Berger was involved in various causes and interests. She supported Catholic causes, was active in the Republican Party, and had a passion for music. Berger was known for being a gracious hostess and enjoyed collecting jewelry. She was a caring and supportive friend to many, and her endless energy and passion were unforgettable to those who knew her.

Despite her immense success and accomplishments, Berger remained humble and always saw room for growth and opportunity. She continued to enjoy putting together real estate deals well into her 80s and believed that retirement meant not enjoying what one did for a living. Berger’s legacy in Lancaster County will continue to inspire and influence generations of real estate professionals to come..
