Kathrine Dana Shaw, a prominent figure and descendant of Dana Point’s namesake, author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., passed away on January 8 at the remarkable age of 102.

In this inspiring memoir, she candidly discussed her decision to forge her own path, deviating from her family’s legacy in writing, and instead pursuing a successful career as a businesswoman, play producer, and publicist.

A Meeting of Legends

Throughout her vibrant life, Shaw had the pleasure of crossing paths with renowned figures. One such encounter was with Walter Knott, the esteemed owner of the beloved Knott’s Berry Farm. Through her business, Catherine Coleman’s Charm School, Shaw had the opportunity to collaborate with Knott. Subsequently, Knott generously leased her the Bird Cage Theatre, allowing her to produce captivating plays within its walls.

A Life Well Lived in San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano was the place Shaw called home for the majority of her existence. Her impact on the community was significant, as she served as the president of the Women’s Club of San Juan. Additionally, in 2008, Shaw was honored as the grand marshal of the Swallows Day Parade, a cherished tradition in the area.
