Investigators interviewed Hobby at the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 9. He allegedly admitted to starting the fire, saying he was burning rotten wood and sardine cans in the rock fire pit on July 29. He claimed he had the fire under control but left the area to get more water to put it out. Hobby said he returned to find the fire had spread, according to the affidavit.

Hobby allegedly told investigators that he had the necessary firefighting equipment, including a shovel, chainsaw, and Nomex clothing. He said he had training in wildland firefighting and had fought fires in Wyoming.

The affidavit states that Hobby was arrested after the interview and taken into custody. He faces multiple charges related to the fire, including first-degree arson and impersonating a peace officer.

The investigation into the Alexander Mountain Fire is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the blaze.
