What happened in the horrific incident?
It was a normal day for me as an IAS student, studying hard to achieve my dream of becoming a civil servant. Little did I know that a nightmare was about to unfold. In just 10 minutes, the basement where me and my friends were studying was flooded with water. The panic and chaos that ensued were unimaginable.
I immediately called the police and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for help at 6:40 PM, but to our dismay, they did not arrive until 9 PM. Those three hours felt like an eternity as we struggled to stay afloat in the rising water.
How did you survive the incident?
Despite the terrifying situation, we managed to keep our wits about us and stay calm. We stayed together as a group, supporting and encouraging each other through the ordeal. We used whatever we could find as makeshift floatation devices to stay above the water.
When the authorities finally arrived, we were rescued from the basement one by one. It was a moment of immense relief and gratitude to be safely out of harm’s way.
What happened to your friends?
Tragically, not all of my friends were as fortunate as I was. Three of my fellow UPSC aspirants lost their lives in the flood. It was a devastating blow to all of us who had shared the same dreams and aspirations.
The loss of my friends has left a void in my heart that can never be filled. Their memories will always live on in my heart, and I will continue to strive for success in their honor.
How has this incident impacted you?
The traumatic experience of the flood has left me with deep emotional scars that will take time to heal. The fear and anxiety that I felt during those hours of uncertainty still linger in my mind.
However, I am determined not to let this tragedy define me. I will use this experience as a motivation to work even harder towards my goal of becoming an IAS officer. I will honor the memory of my friends by fulfilling the dreams we once shared.
What lessons have you learned from this incident?
This harrowing experience has taught me the importance of being prepared for any emergency situation. I now realize the value of having a well-thought-out evacuation plan and being equipped with basic survival skills.
I have also learned the true meaning of friendship and camaraderie. The bond that was formed between me and my friends in the face of adversity is something I will always cherish.
As I reflect on the events of that fateful day, I am reminded of the fragility of life and the unpredictability of nature. I am grateful for every moment that I am given and will strive to make the most of it.
