Accident – Death – Obituary News :
A 61-year-old man, Troy Davis, was found dead in his cell at the Lake County Jail on May 3, 2024. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that a correctional officer discovered Davis unresponsive in his cell during routine rounds.
Discovery and Response
The correctional officer attempted to wake Davis but found him unconscious and not breathing. Medical assistance was immediately called, and CPR, as well as an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), were used in an attempt to revive him. Despite the efforts of the staff and paramedics from the Waukegan Fire Department, Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Background and Circumstances
Davis had been remanded to the Lake County Jail on April 26 to serve a 60-day sentence for driving with a revoked driver’s license. He was housed in a single-inmate cell in Pod 3 Southeast and did not have a cellmate. Prior to the incident, rounds had been conducted, and Davis showed no signs of distress.

Investigation and Inquest
Following Davis’ death, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to conduct an independent investigation. The task force found no suspicious marks or injuries on Davis’ body, attributing his death to underlying health conditions.
During a jury inquest, it was determined that Davis died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease. The Chief Deputy Coroner stated that inquests are standard procedure for officer-involved and in-custody deaths, providing a thorough inquiry into the cause of death.
Overall, the investigation and inquest concluded that Davis’ death was a result of natural causes, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding his untimely passing in the Lake County Jail.
