Bruce Lee Cockrell, a 47-year-old man from Hope, has been formally charged with capital murder and arson following a devastating incident that took place on Monday, July 8, 2024. The victim of the incident tragically succumbed to her injuries, leading to these serious charges being brought against him.
Emergency Response and Investigation
At around 8:41 pm on the fateful day, Deputy Kyle Malone and Sergeant Derick Bunn of the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call regarding a structure fire at 5045 Highway 67 West. The caller reported that a female resident of the property was engulfed in flames, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement.
Sheriff James Singleton revealed that upon reaching the scene, Deputy Malone and Sgt. Bunn discovered that the fire was actually located at 114 Hempstead 1530. They were met with a harrowing sight as they saw the female victim, later identified as Tonya Cockrell, 35, suffering from second and third-degree burns all over her body.

Deputy Malone, in conjunction with the Fulton Volunteer Firefighter Clay Antley, worked swiftly to assess the situation and provide immediate medical attention to Ms. Cockrell. She was quickly taken to Christus St. Michael’s in TEXarkana for initial treatment before being transferred to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Burn Unit in critical condition.

As the investigation progressed, shocking details emerged from the medical staff at St. Michael’s ER. According to a nurse, Ms. Cockrell purportedly disclosed that her husband, Bruce, had subjected her to physical abuse, including hitting and punching, as well as verbal abuse, before dousing her in gasoline and setting her alight.
