The Arkansas State Police (ASP) made a significant arrest on Monday, July 7, when they apprehended two individuals from Texas who were allegedly involved in a sophisticated barcode swapping scheme that spanned multiple states. The suspects, identified as Terry White, aged 52, from Pasadena, Texas, and Robert Diaz, aged 34, from Spring, Texas, were stopped by ASP troopers on U.S. Highway 65 near Tower Road in Boone County for a routine traffic violation.

Discovery of Stolen Goods

During a search of their vehicle, troopers discovered 22 unopened garage door openers in the truck bed and rear floorboard. Each of these items was estimated to be worth around $200. However, the duo could not provide any receipts or proof of purchase for the openers, raising suspicion among the authorities.

Connection to Barcode Swapping Scheme

Further investigation into the origin of the garage door openers revealed that they were sourced from a Lowe’s store in Bentonville, Arkansas. This discovery, coupled with additional evidence, led the ASP to believe that White and Diaz were part of a larger barcode swapping operation that extended across state lines.

Both men were subsequently taken into custody and charged with felony theft by receiving. They were transported to the Boone County Detention Center to await further legal proceedings.

Seizure of Stolen Items

The ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division conducted a thorough examination of the evidence and determined that White and Diaz were linked to a substantial amount of stolen goods from various states, with an estimated value exceeding $160,000. This seizure underscores the scale and magnitude of the barcode swapping scheme in which the suspects were allegedly involved.

In light of these developments, the ASP is working closely with law enforcement agencies from other states to unravel the full extent of the operation and bring all responsible parties to justice. The arrest of White and Diaz marks a significant breakthrough in combating organized retail crime and protecting businesses and consumers from fraudulent activities.
