Sydney Police Station : Beware: Police Hoax Scam Calls on the Rise

Residents in Sydney have been targeted in a recent scam where hoax phone callers pretend to be from a Sydney police station. The scammers try to obtain personal details over the phone by telling the person who received the call that they have been identified as a victim of a scam or online fraud.

Multiple reports have been made to the Sydney City Police Area Command officers about phone calls and voice messages from people claiming to be from The Rocks Police Station and requesting personal information.

The police are currently investigating the source of these calls and urge people to take precautions to reduce the risk of falling victim to these cold-call scams. They advise individuals to hang up immediately if they feel threatened or pressured by the caller.

A police spokesperson has issued a warning, advising people not to disclose their personal information to unknown callers and never provide bank details over the phone. It is crucial to never share PIN numbers or account passwords with anyone and avoid making payments to callers via phone, internet, or cash.

“If you are unsure about the identity of the person on the other end of the line, ask them questions. If they dodge your inquiries or refuse to provide information, it’s best to end the call,” the spokesperson emphasized.

“Do not succumb to pressure from scammers. They often use persuasive scripts to create a sense of urgency and force you to make a quick decision. If you suspect that you have fallen victim to a scam, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to the authorities,” the spokesperson added.
