Washington: A 26-year-old Indian national, Siddhant Vitthal Patil from Maharashtra, tragically drowned in Glacier National Park in Montana while on vacation with his friends, according to park authorities. Patil was hiking above the gorge on June 6 on Avalanche Lake Trail when he fell into Avalanche Creek after slipping on a large rock. Despite efforts to locate his body, it remains submerged due to obstacles in the water.
Search operations have been ongoing, with helicopters conducting aerial searches and rangers monitoring the area. Ground search efforts from the gorge to the bridge on Trail of the Cedars have been undertaken, but the depth and turbulence of the water have made it unsearchable. The Indian Consulate in Seattle and Maharashtra Deputy Minister have been in touch with authorities to expedite the search for Patil.
Recent Indian Deaths in the US
Patil’s disappearance adds to a series of tragic incidents involving Indian nationals in the US. Sai Surya Avinash Gadde, a student at Trine University, drowned at Barbervilley Falls in Albany on July 7. Guntipalli Sowmya, a student at Florida Atlantic University, was killed in a road accident in Florida on May 26. These incidents have raised concerns within the Indian community in the US.
Since the beginning of 2024, there have been at least a dozen deaths of Indian and Indian-origin students in the US, prompting calls for increased safety measures and awareness among the community. The Indian Consulate General in New York has been working on repatriating the mortal remains of the deceased to their families in India.
