Washington: A 26-year-old Indian national, Siddhant Vitthal Patil, has been missing for over a month after drowning in the renowned Glacier National Park in the United States. Patil, who hailed from Maharashtra, was on a vacation with friends in the state of Montana when the tragic incident occurred.

Siddhant Vitthal Patil, who worked in California’s San Jose, was hiking above the gorge on June 6 on Avalanche Lake Trail when he fell off a large rock into Avalanche Creek, as stated by the National Park Service. It is yet to be determined whether Patil slipped on a wet portion of the rock or fell after losing his balance. Patil is presumed dead, according to the statement. His friends witnessed him going underwater and resurfacing before being carried away by the current into the gorge. Local authorities are still conducting searches for his body.

Following Patil’s disappearance, his friends reached out to Indian authorities for assistance in locating him. In response, the Indian Consulate in Seattle stated that it was in contact with the office of the Governor of Montana regarding the matter and providing regular updates to the family.

Search Operations

Helicopters conducted aerial searches, but rescue rangers suspect that Patil’s body may be trapped underwater by a submerged object such as a fallen tree or rock. The gorge’s depth and turbulence, creating whitewater conditions, make it difficult to search. Rangers attempted to use a drone to locate the body but were unsuccessful.

Similar Incident

This incident comes shortly after another tragic drowning involving an Indian-origin student, Sai Surya Avinash Gadde, at Barberville Falls in New York. Gadde, who was studying at Trine University, slipped and drowned while hiking at the falls. Hailing from Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, Gadde had moved to the US in 2023 to pursue his master’s degree. The Indian Consulate in New York is providing assistance for the repatriation of Gadde’s remains back to India.
