A man connected to an assault at a pizza restaurant earlier this week has been formally charged in relation to the tragic death of a Houston-area deputy who was pursuing him. The incident unfolded when deputies and investigators from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office swiftly responded to an aggravated assault against a clerk at a Little Caesars Pizza establishment just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Ronald Palmer, reportedly became agitated after receiving an incorrect order. He proceeded to verbally attack and physically assault the employee before fleeing the scene, as Chief Deputy Mike Lee detailed during a press conference.

Following the incident, a manhunt was launched based on the description of the suspect’s getaway vehicle provided by the employee. Deputy Fernando Esqueda, who was part of the team tracking down Palmer, located the car and alerted his colleagues. Tragically, during a phone call, Deputy Esqueda was ambushed by the suspect, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, the 28-year-old deputy succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.

His unwavering commitment to duty and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten."

In a positive turn of events, Ronald Palmer was apprehended by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office the following day without incident. He had been added to the Most Wanted Fugitive List and now faces charges of capital murder in connection to Deputy Esqueda’s death, as well as the initial aggravated assault.

Sheriff Gonzalez expressed his gratitude towards the Houston Police Department and other public safety partners for their assistance in the case. He shared a poignant sentiment from one of Deputy Esqueda’s close friends, stating, "Fernando would be so proud right now."

In conclusion, this tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face in the line of duty. The community mourns the loss of Deputy Esqueda while also celebrating his bravery and dedication to keeping the public safe.
