Officers and investigators from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office swiftly responded to reports of an aggravated assault against a clerk at a Little Caesars Pizza establishment just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday. The suspect, later identified as 44-year-old Ronald Palmer, reportedly became irate after receiving an incorrect order. He proceeded to verbally abuse and physically assault the employee before fleeing the scene, as detailed by Chief Deputy Mike Lee during a press briefing.

The employee managed to provide a description of the suspect’s getaway vehicle to law enforcement, prompting a widespread manhunt. Deputy Fernando Esqueda played a pivotal role in this operation, spotting the car in question and informing his colleagues of its whereabouts. Tragically, during a subsequent phone call, Deputy Esqueda was ambushed by the suspect. Upon arriving at the scene, fellow detectives found his undercover vehicle riddled with bullet holes and Esqueda himself suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in a patrol car, the 28-year-old deputy succumbed to his injuries.

Deputy Esqueda had served with distinction at the sheriff’s office for five years and was a valued member of the Violent Person Task Force. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed his condolences, stating, “We stand in solidarity with Deputy Esqueda’s loved ones, friends, and colleagues during this profoundly challenging period. His unwavering dedication to duty and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

The suspect, Ronald Palmer, was apprehended by authorities the following day without incident. He had been added to the Most Wanted Fugitive List and was subsequently charged with capital murder. Additionally, he was wanted for the initial aggravated assault at the pizza restaurant.

Sheriff Gonzalez extended his gratitude to the Houston Police Department and other public safety partners for their assistance in resolving this case.
