A suspect posing as a law enforcement officer was apprehended after a high-speed pursuit in North Carolina, during which he attempted to discard drugs from his vehicle. The incident occurred on the evening of July 9, when detectives from the Monroe Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a Toyota Camry displaying a counterfeit license plate. The driver, upon realizing he was being pulled over, rammed his car into a patrol vehicle in an effort to evade capture, prompting a chase that extended into Mecklenburg County.

During the pursuit, the suspect endangered other motorists by driving recklessly at high speeds, running red lights, and even throwing packages of illicit substances out of the car window. The pursuit came to a halt on Providence Road, where a Union County patrol car successfully disabled the suspect’s vehicle, leading to his arrest.

The suspect was identified as Roger Desmond Burns III, a resident of Indian Trail. Upon searching his vehicle, officers discovered bags containing methamphetamine and fentanyl. It was also revealed that the vehicle Burns was driving had been reported stolen in York County, South Carolina. Additionally, law enforcement recovered stolen items belonging to a federal agency, including a bulletproof vest, handcuffs, an agent’s credentials, and police patches. Burns was found to be in possession of a replica handgun, holster, and removable strobe lights.

Following his arrest, Burns was booked into the Union County Detention Center and given a $750,000 secured bond. He is facing multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, possession of a stolen vehicle, trafficking in opiates, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony flee to elude arrest, and reckless driving.
