Accident – Death – Obituary News :
The driver of the pickup truck that caught fire after crashing on the east side of Athens over the weekend has been identified as 25-year-old Melvin Way Jr. of Athens.
Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson stated that authorities initially had difficulty identifying Way due to the severe burns he sustained in the accident.
Positive identification was finally confirmed on Thursday with the assistance of dental records at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation forensics laboratory in Decatur.

Cause of the Fatal Crash Still Under Investigation
The cause of the fatal crash is still under investigation by the county police. The incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday when Way’s pickup truck veered off the road at the intersection of Vine and Herman streets, ultimately colliding with a utility pole.
By the time first responders arrived at the scene, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
