Residents of Wakiso Sub-county in Wakiso District are up in arms following the National Environment Management Authority’s (Nema) decision to mark more houses for demolition as part of an effort to restore wetlands in Uganda. The affected villages of Nakuwadde-Bbira and Ganda-Nasere have seen approximately 300 houses marked for demolition by Nema officials.

Residents Voice their Opposition

Mr Mathias Kisitu, a resident of Nakuwadde, expressed his discontent with the situation, stating that the marked houses are situated on dry land without any visible connection to the gazetted swamps. He called for clear boundaries to be drawn before any further actions are taken by Nema.

Local leaders, led by Mr Silas Kasaato, have pledged to mobilise affected residents to protest against Nema’s actions. Mr Kasaato emphasised the need for transparency and communication from Nema to avoid further unrest among the residents.

Protests Escalate

Tensions reached a boiling point when police clashed with residents carrying placards and notices, leading to the dispersal of crowds with teargas. The unrest further intensified after the tragic death of a resident, allegedly linked to the stress caused by the looming demolitions.

Mr William Lubuulwa, a senior communications officer at Nema, announced a temporary halt to the demolition exercise, promising further communication once the operation resumes. However, residents like Mr Brian Kasumba and Mr Alfred Kyakabare fear significant financial losses due to the marked properties.

Residents Appeal for Government Intervention

Residents like Mr Christopher Nuwagaba and Mr Nobert Akaheebwa, who have invested substantial amounts in developing their properties, are calling for government intervention to prevent further demolitions. They fear the loss of their homes and investments if Nema’s actions continue unchecked.
