Authorities in Omaha, Nebraska, were called to a heartbreaking scene on Wednesday, July 10, when they discovered a 5-year-old boy unresponsive inside a car parked in a local business parking lot. The Omaha Police Department responded to a report of the child’s condition at 3025 N 93rd Street, where several businesses are situated. Tragically, the child was pronounced deceased after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Arrest Made in Connection with Child’s Death

In a shocking turn of events, the boy’s foster mother, Juanita Pinon, aged 40, was arrested in connection with the child’s death. She now faces charges of “child abuse by neglect, resulting in death.” Pinon was taken into custody and placed in Douglas County Corrections following the incident. According to police spokesperson Chris Gordon, Pinon has not provided a statement regarding whether the incident was accidental or intentional.

Details of the Incident Unfold

The young boy, identified as Dionicio Perez, was reportedly left unattended inside the vehicle for an extended period of time, according to authorities. A police report obtained by ABC affiliate KETV revealed that the child had been inside the car for a staggering seven hours before being discovered.

Temperatures outside the vehicle that day were around 88 degrees Fahrenheit, with meteorologists estimating that it would have taken just 10 minutes for the inside of the car to reach 100 degrees. Employees at the beauty salon where the car was parked indicated that Pinon was not a customer but was working in a business office attached to the establishment.

Concerns Over Child Heatstroke Deaths

Tragically, this incident adds to the concerning statistics surrounding child heatstroke deaths in vehicles. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), ten children have already died from heatstroke this year, with 29 fatalities recorded last year. On average, 37 children under the age of 15 lose their lives each year due to heatstroke after being left in a car.

The NSC’s research indicates that in more than half of these tragic cases, the child was forgotten in the vehicle by a parent or caregiver. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services confirmed that the child was in foster care and is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.

As authorities continue their investigation into this heartbreaking incident, the community mourns the loss of a young life under such tragic circumstances.
