A 41-year-old man has been taken into custody on suspicion of killing his parents in their San Juan Capistrano mobile home on Tuesday, July 9, according to a statement released by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The deceased couple have been identified as Antoinette Gerdvil, aged 79, and Ronald Walter Gerdvil, aged 77, both residents of San Juan Capistrano. The suspect, Joseph Brandon Gerdvil, their 41-year-old son, was shot and injured by an OCSD deputy after attempting to flee the scene.

Investigators from OCSD believe that the son mutilated and decapitated his parents, as well as their dog, before making his escape.

Details of the Incident

The tragic events unfolded shortly after 7:30 a.m. in the 32000 block of Alipaz Street at the San Juan Mobile Estates, located near Del Obispo Street, following a report of domestic assault.

Upon arrival at the mobile home, deputies discovered the elderly man and woman deceased in what was described as a “horrific scene” by an OCSD spokesperson. The family dog was also found dead inside the residence.

While deputies were at the scene commencing their investigation, they received information from Sheriff’s Dispatch about a bloody male chasing a maintenance worker within the same community. The individual then proceeded to steal the worker’s golf cart and flee the area in an unknown direction. A Sheriff’s Community Services Officer later located the suspect driving the stolen golf cart, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting.

Suspect’s Condition and Legal Proceedings

Following the altercation, Joseph Gerdvil was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition as of Wednesday. OCSD has stated that once he is deemed fit for booking, he will be transferred to the Orange County Sheriff’s Jail and charged with two counts of homicide. It is anticipated that additional charges and enhancements may be levied against him.

Motive Yet to be Determined

Despite ongoing investigations, OCSD has refrained from disclosing any potential motives behind the killings.
