Authorities are currently investigating a fatal shooting that took place on Thursday afternoon involving deputies from the White County Sheriff’s Office. The request for investigation was made by 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. at a residence in the 100 block of Olen Road. Deputies had been responding to a disturbance call at a nearby location involving the individual in question, identified as James John Fox, aged 40. Upon the deputies’ arrival, Fox allegedly emerged from his home and opened fire with a rifle. In response, the deputies returned fire, resulting in Fox being fatally shot. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained any injuries during the exchange.

TBI Involvement

Special agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) have taken on the task of independently examining the sequence of events that led to the shooting. This process includes gathering evidence and conducting interviews with relevant parties. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to the District Attorney General for further review and consideration.

It is important to note that the TBI’s role in such cases is strictly that of fact-finders. The agency does not make determinations regarding the justification of an officer’s actions in these circumstances; that responsibility lies with the District Attorney General who requested the TBI’s involvement.

As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragic event in White County. The TBI remains committed to conducting a thorough and impartial inquiry to shed light on the events leading up to the fatal shooting.
