The incident began with reports of a road rage incident around 3:30pm on the Fourth of July. The suspect, allegedly identified as Pelayo, was said to have thrown fireworks at a residence before fleeing in a vehicle heading westbound on Burnett Street. Following these reports, law enforcement quickly located the suspect’s vehicle and initiated a pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle was observed ignoring several stop signs and reaching speeds of around 45 to 60 miles per hour within the city limits. Eventually, the vehicle left the city, continuing north on Highway A, before coming to a stop near a flooded field.

Arrest and Discovery

Upon stopping the vehicle, Pelayo exited and attempted to flee on foot. He was seen discarding an object into the water before surrendering to the authorities. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a holster and a 9mm magazine. A firearm was also discovered in the nearby field.

During questioning, Pelayo claimed that he was running out of fear for his life and that this was the reason for not stopping during the pursuit.

Legal Ramifications

If found guilty of the felony charges, the 20-year-old could potentially face up to 18 and a half years in prison. Following his initial court appearance, a cash bond of $5,000 was set, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 1st.

It remains to be seen how this incident will unfold in the legal system and what consequences Pelayo may face as a result of his actions on the Fourth of July.
