(HOUSTON) — Authorities in Harris County, Texas, have arrested the man accused of fatally shooting Deputy Fernando Esqueda in an ambush attack. Ronnie Palmer has been charged with capital murder in connection with the tragic incident.

Palmer is also facing charges of aggravated assault following an altercation at a Little Caesars pizza shop. The series of events unfolded late Wednesday night when deputies responded to reports of an aggravated assault at the establishment.
Senseless Act of Violence
Harris County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Lee described the incident as senseless during a news conference. According to Lee, Palmer entered the pizza shop to pick up an order but became agitated when he discovered that the pizza was incorrect.
After verbally assaulting an employee, Palmer reportedly brandished a firearm and pistol-whipped the worker before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, the employee was able to provide law enforcement with details of the suspect’s vehicle, aiding in the subsequent investigation.
Tragic Loss of a Dedicated Officer
Deputy Esqueda, a 28-year-old veteran of the department, encountered Palmer’s vehicle while on duty. He informed a fellow detective of the sighting before being ambushed and shot multiple times. Despite efforts to save him, Esqueda tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed his grief over the loss, noting Esqueda’s dedication to serving on the violent persons task force. Gonzalez described Esqueda as a member of an elite unit that targeted dangerous individuals within the community.
Justice Sought for Fallen Officer
Palmer was initially sought in connection with the assault at Little Caesars and was later identified as a person of interest in Esqueda’s murder. The authorities are now focused on ensuring that justice is served for the fallen officer.
