Police probing Northwest DC assault as hate bias crime

Authorities in Washington, D.C. are currently investigating a distressing incident where a Jewish man was targeted in Northwest D.C. in what is believed to be a hate crime. The victim, identified as Ariel Golfeyz, sat down with FOX 5 to recount the harrowing ordeal.

WASHINGTON – Law enforcement officials are looking into an assault on a Jewish man in Northwest D.C. as a potential hate crime. Ariel Golfeyz, the victim, reached out to FOX 5 to shed light on the terrifying incident that took place on Wednesday.

Golfeyz contacted FOX 5 following the attack, expressing his desire to raise awareness about what transpired.

According to a report filed by the D.C. Police, the incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, near the park adjacent to George Washington University Hospital at 890 23rd Street, NW.

The victim informed the responding officer that he was on his way to work when an assailant approached him in the park and, without uttering a word, commenced a physical attack.

Golfeyz recounted to authorities that after enduring several punches, the suspect proceeded to use derogatory language, making offensive remarks about his Jewish faith and accusing him of being complicit in acts of violence.

As a result of the assault, Golfeyz sustained minor facial injuries and a laceration to his right elbow, for which he received immediate treatment at the scene.

The victim expressed his belief that he was singled out due to the religious attire he was wearing, specifically his yarmulke. This traumatic experience has left him feeling unsafe displaying his religious symbols in the District.

“I wouldn’t say I’m scared, but I will likely be concealing my religious items from now on in Washington, D.C. as a result of what occurred,” Golfeyz disclosed. “I don’t anticipate wearing my religious items in public in the District anymore.”

A security officer from GWU was the first to arrive at the scene and managed to apprehend the suspect until the arrival of MPD officers, who subsequently took the individual into custody.

The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Walter James.

James also sustained a minor laceration to his right knee and has been arrested on charges of simple assault and committing a hate bias crime.
