Law enforcement officers fatally shot a 37-year-old man in a park in Caledonia on Wednesday after he allegedly fired at them first.
The incident took place in Cliffside Park in the village of Caledonia on Wednesday morning. According to a statement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice, officers were called to the park at 9:47 a.m. after receiving a report of a “man down.”
A social media post from the Racine County Sheriffs Office stated that a citizen reported seeing a male in all black clothing lying face down on a path and not moving. The citizen expressed concern for their safety in approaching the individual.
Law Enforcement Response
Upon receiving the call, a Racine County Sheriff’s deputy and two officers from the Caledonia Police Department responded to the scene. The DOJ statement indicated that upon their arrival, the man discharged a firearm.

A tactical team consisting of officers and first responders from various law enforcement agencies, including the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, Caledonia Police Department, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Caledonia Fire Department, was deployed to the scene.
Efforts were made to negotiate with the man, but the situation escalated, leading to law enforcement officers using deadly force. The man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Investigation and Aftermath
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. The number of officers on leave has not been disclosed. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is currently conducting an inquiry into the matter.
According to the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, the deceased individual was identified as a 37-year-old white male with connections to the City of Racine and the Village of Mount Pleasant.
