A driver fleeing from the police on the Fourth of July wreaked havoc on a beloved Selma store, Surf N Turf. Surveillance footage captured the dramatic scene as the car careened down East Anderson Street, toppling a light pole before crashing into the decades-old lawn mower business.

Joseph Arant and Matt Pearce, longstanding owners of the shop, were left in shock at the sight of the extensive damage caused by the reckless driver. Fortunately, the store was closed for the holiday, and all employees were safely away from the building at the time of the incident.

Describing the aftermath, co-owner Joseph Arant expressed, “It was total chaos. Our front counter was obliterated, and the products on display were scattered all over in the aftermath of the crash.”

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Tyrone Jones, was behind the wheel of the grey Hyundai captured in the surveillance video. Jones hastily exited the vehicle after the collision and was later discovered hiding in a backroom behind a stack of tires before being apprehended.

Reflecting on the senseless destruction caused by Jones, Arant lamented, “It’s heartbreaking to see the fruits of our hard work destroyed in mere seconds by someone’s carelessness.”

Following the incident, the close-knit community of Selma has rallied around the business owners in a show of support. Co-owner Matt Pearce expressed gratitude for the outpouring of assistance, stating, “The community has been incredibly supportive, with numerous individuals reaching out to offer help and resources. It truly showcases the tight bond within our town.”

Despite the setback, Arant and Pearce remain optimistic about the future of Surf N Turf, aiming to reopen their doors in the coming weeks. However, they emphasise the importance of community and mutual care in the face of such challenges.

As WRAL News awaits further details from the Selma police department regarding the circumstances leading to the crash, the owners of Surf N Turf are focused on rebuilding and restoring their business to its former glory.
