A man who barricaded himself in the attic of his house on Thursday afternoon and threatened a shoot-out with law enforcement officers has been taken into custody. The incident, which took place on Sparta Highway, ended peacefully with no injuries reported.

Standoff Situation

Eatonton Police Chief Howell Cardwell and Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills revealed that the standoff occurred when they attempted to arrest 26-year-old Tommy Lee Kell at his residence on State Route 16. Kell’s wife informed the authorities that he had retreated to the attic and was prepared to harm the police officers.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were on the scene with active warrants for Kell’s arrest. Chief Cardwell called for reinforcements from the sheriff’s office to ensure the situation was handled safely.

Tactical Response

Sheriff Sills deployed a tactical armored vehicle, known as the BearCat, to the location. The authorities blocked off the highway, evacuated nearby properties, and safely removed other occupants from the house before taking action.

Using a flameless smoke grenade containing tear gas, Sheriff Sills was able to subdue Kell without any shots being fired. The controlled approach prevented any potential fire hazards and ensured the safety of everyone involved.

Arrest and Charges

Following the incident, Kell was transported to Putnam General Hospital for evaluation. He will face charges of obstruction of law enforcement officers and probation violation. Sheriff Sills highlighted Kell’s extensive criminal history, which includes various offences in multiple counties.

Authorities recovered gun cases from the attic but did not locate a firearm. Despite the challenges faced during the operation, the successful resolution of the standoff was a testament to the coordinated efforts of law enforcement.
