The victim of the robbery, who worked for Ali’s Takeaway in Spennymoor, recognized Laver as a customer at the restaurant, where his partner had also worked. The victim was delivering a garlic sauce pot to an address in Princess Court when he was confronted by the trio. Laver and Price blocked his path back to his car, with Laver brandishing a hammer and Price wielding a car jack. Oughton, who had driven a Ford Focus to the scene, prevented the victim from re-entering his vehicle.

The victim was assaulted with the hammer and car jack, sustaining injuries to his hand, arm, and leg. The trio demanded the keys to his car and subsequently drove off in the BMW. A police chase ensued, resulting in the BMW crashing through a fence on Rock Road. Oughton and Price were later found attempting to hide in nearby gardens.

Laver, who was identified as the driver of the Ford Focus, crashed into a parked Mini Cooper before seeking treatment for facial injuries at a hospital in Durham. Despite initially providing “no comment” replies during police interviews, all three defendants eventually pleaded guilty to charges including robbery, aggravated vehicle taking, and possession of offensive weapons.

During the sentencing hearing at Durham Crown Court, it was revealed that Oughton and Price had extensive criminal records, while Laver had only one previous conviction for theft. Oughton’s defense lawyer cited family bereavements as contributing factors to his involvement in the crime, while Price’s lawyer mentioned drug use as a mitigating factor.
