One of the assault charges against an 18-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has been elevated to attempted murder following a brutal attack with a metal baseball bat last month, according to police reports.

The suspect, who remains in custody at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre, was apprehended by patrol officers after they discovered a severely beaten individual on Cathcart Street on the evening of June 23.

Violent Attack with a Bat

An investigation uncovered that the victim, who was unknown to the assailant but later identified as the accused, was repeatedly struck with a metal bat in the torso and head, as stated in a police news release.

Subsequently, in the early hours of June 24, officers responded to a separate call for assistance where they apprehended the suspect.

Additional Assault with a Weapon

While detained for the initial aggravated assault charge, further investigations revealed that the accused had also assaulted another individual with a metal bat in the 600 block of Albert Street, resulting in a charge of assault with a weapon.

The suspect was taken back into custody at the correctional facility and now faces an upgraded charge of attempted murder, in addition to two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

As of now, the individual remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
