Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that state authorities are now actively participating in the manhunt for the person of interest in the ambush shooting of a Houston-area deputy overnight. Authorities in and around Houston are on the lookout for Ronnie Palmer, aged 44, in connection with the tragic line of duty death of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Fernando Esqueda. Deputy Esqueda, who was only 28 years old and had served as a dedicated member of the force for five years, was fatally shot in the line of duty.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the devastating news, stating that he was personally involved in the ongoing manhunt for Ronnie Palmer. Palmer is considered a person of interest in the shooting and is also wanted for an aggravated assault that took place at a Little Ceasar’s pizzeria on Wallisville Road in East Harris County. The incident at the pizzeria involved an enraged customer who allegedly pistol-whipped a worker before fleeing the scene. It was during the search for this suspect that Deputy Esqueda was ambushed while on the phone with another detective, leading to the tragic turn of events.

Backup officers discovered Deputy Esqueda’s vehicle with multiple bullet holes on the 13200 block of Italian Cypress Trail around 1 a.m. Thursday. He had been shot multiple times and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Chief Deputy Mike Lee described Deputy Esqueda as a member of a highly skilled task force that tackles some of the most dangerous criminals on a daily basis. He was known for his dedication and expertise in his role.

Governor Abbott has pledged the full support of the state to local law enforcement agencies as they continue their search for the gunman responsible for Deputy Esqueda’s death. He emphasized that violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated in Texas and that state troopers and special agents are actively assisting in the manhunt. Abbott called for prayers for Deputy Esqueda’s family, loved ones, and the entire Harris County community during this difficult time.

Authorities are urging anyone with information on Ronnie Palmer’s whereabouts to come forward and contact Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477). Sheriff Gonzalez expressed the need for support and prayers for Deputy Esqueda’s family and vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice. The tragic loss of Deputy Esqueda serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day in the line of duty.
