The individual who tragically lost his life in a fiery crash in east Athens on Sunday has been formally identified as Melvin Wade Jr. from Athens.
Confirmation of Wade’s identity came from Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson on Thursday. The 25-year-old was positively identified through dental records provided to the State Crime Lab.
Authorities from the Athens-Clarke Police Department were alerted to the incident shortly before 3 a.m. on July 7. Upon arrival at the intersection of Herman Street and Vine Street, officers encountered a Chevrolet pickup truck engulfed in flames.

The pickup had collided with a telephone pole, with witnesses in the area reporting that the vehicle’s back tires were spinning. It is believed that this is where the fire originated. Investigators are currently working to establish the reasons behind Wade’s deviation from the road.
Due to the severity of the fire, the body was rendered unrecognisable, prompting law enforcement to transport it to the crime lab for official identification.
