The pilot involved in the crash has been identified as Juliana Turchetti, a 45-year-old native of Brazil, who tragically lost her life in the line of duty.
Identification and Background
Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton confirmed Turchetti’s identity on Thursday, shedding light on her background and personal life. Turchetti was a dedicated pilot employed by Dauntless Air, a reputable company with a long-standing history of providing firefighting aircraft services. Originally from Brazil, Turchetti was working in the U.S. on a visa and leaves behind a 17-year-old son as well as numerous family members back in her home country.
Firefighting Operations
Dauntless Air, the company Turchetti was working for, has been operating firefighting aircraft for over 25 years and holds contracts with both state and federal agencies. The tragic accident occurred when Turchetti’s Air Tractor AT-802 plane crashed into the mountainside and landed in Hauser Lake during firefighting efforts for the Horse Gulch Fire.
Current Fire Situation
As of Thursday afternoon, the Horse Gulch Fire, which is believed to be human-caused, had spread to 2,000 acres. Evacuation orders are in place for residents along Canyon Ferry Road and surrounding areas, with road and trail closures within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The Red Cross of Montana has set up an evacuation center in Helena to assist those affected by the fire.
