HESPERIA, Calif. – A man was apprehended by authorities in San Bernardino County for driving under the influence following a dramatic police pursuit earlier this week. The suspect, identified as Juan Carrera Suarez, had an outstanding DUI warrant at the time of his arrest.

The incident unfolded at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 9 in the 157000 block of Main Street in Hesperia. Law enforcement officers from the Hesperia Police Department responded to reports of a man brandishing a weapon in a parking lot.

Upon arrival, deputies observed a teenager entering Suarez’s vehicle. As they approached the driver, Suarez, they instructed him to relinquish the weapon and exit the car. Instead, Suarez reversed the vehicle, collided with a patrol car, and fled the scene.

Authorities engaged in a pursuit spanning approximately 10 miles, during which Suarez exited the car with the weapon, subsequently dropping it before re-entering the vehicle and continuing to evade law enforcement.

Ultimately, Suarez came to a stop, at which point deputies determined both he and the teenage passenger, aged 16, were under the influence. The minor was released to their parents, while Suarez was taken into custody on charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, child abuse, evading police, driving in the wrong direction, and DUI. Further investigation revealed that Suarez also had an outstanding warrant related to a previous DUI offence.

Following the pursuit, authorities confirmed that the weapon allegedly carried by Suarez was an airsoft gun.

The nature of the relationship between Suarez and the teenager remains unclear, prompting ongoing investigations by law enforcement officials. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact the Hesperia Police Department at 760-947-1500.
