HARVEY COUNTY — A dramatic scene unfolded in Harvey County on Tuesday night as law enforcement officers successfully apprehended a motorcyclist who attempted to evade capture. The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. when a Harvey County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a motorcycle without a visible license plate traveling on Interstate 135, south of the SE 36th Street exit near Newton.

The motorcyclist, later identified as 35-year-old Joseph Irwin from Mulvane, chose to ignore the deputy’s signals to pull over and instead accelerated, prompting a high-speed pursuit through the southern areas of Newton. The chase lasted approximately five minutes before Irwin lost control of his motorcycle and came to a halt near the parking lot of the Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

Following his arrest, Irwin faces charges of felony flee and elude, in addition to other traffic misdemeanours. He is currently being held at the Harvey County Detention Center awaiting further legal proceedings.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the pursuit, and there was minimal damage to the golf course property where the chase concluded. The Newton Police Department provided valuable assistance in bringing the situation to a safe resolution.
